Hey so, I recently sat down with Jonathan Waters from The Metal Review which was a blast. He asked a couple of tricky questions, but I think I did ok!

Check it out at this link http://themetalreview.com/?p=7034

or scroll through….

Jonathan: Firstly, for everyone reading, tell them all a bit about your music

My music would be best described as a fusion of soaring melodies, heavy riffage, mindblowing lead guitar all with a dynamic progressive edge.

Jonathan: Your music on your Facebook band page is pretty versatile, spanning across a multitude of genres. How would you best describe the genre of the music you play?

I’m primarily a progressive rock artist and I love it. I’m in a position where I can go in so many different directions with my songwriting. If I wanna create a straight up old school Thrash metal tune like “For Your Life” I can. If I want to create an 18 minute epic with lots of different sections like “The Journey Home”, I can go ahead and do it. My mindset is always focused on keeping my music diverse and interesting as possible.

Jonathan: Your musical technique is amazing, a lot of guitarists learn the absolute technicalities of music, have you ever had classical music educations (i.e. learning all the chord progressions, scales, etc), or did you start playing just by feel?

It’s been a combination of those two worlds. I came from an educational background first. I started playing quite young and my parents started me on guitar lessons. I had 4 different teachers in my first few years which ended up being really cool. I built up fundamentals and learned different ways of approaching guitar from all of my teachers. Once I had a few years under my belt, I then started really getting further into music and learning the art of playing by feel.

Jonathan: Who are some of your musical inspirations? Do you ever hear a specific band or artist and think, “I want my sound to be as awesome as this”?

I think there’s some of my obvious influences that are always with me. There’s a long list of guitar heroes I look up to. Angus Young (my first inspiration), Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Eddie Van Halen and heaps more. There’s a long list of metal bands, Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Nevermore, Strapping Young Lad, Symphony X and heaps more. At the moment, I’m loving Karnivool and I’ve also got Gary Moores- Still Got the blues album on high rotation at the moment. A few months ago, I had John Williams’ score from Episode 3 Star Wars on which is an incredible piece of music. I find my inspirations are changing all the time. I would say I try and work towards more along the lines of trying to sound just awesome rather than trying to copy someone else.

Jonathan: A lot of musicians say that they also draw on inspiration from other fine arts, life experiences, etc; would you agree with this sentiment? Have you ever found that you’ve found inspiration in any of the above, if so, what?

Oh yes absolutely. At the moment, I’m finding a lot of inspiration in writing from life experience. Whether I’ve personally experienced something specific or witnessed something happen to someone else. For me, that’s where the creative juices are flowing at the moment. There’s a lot of depth and realism there, I can connect with it more emotionally and filter it through to the music. My album “The Journey Home” deals with inner struggle, loss, hope and love. Those topics alone- there’s quite a bit of ground to cover right there!

Jonathan: What can we expect from you and The Chris Timms Experience in the coming year? Any big plans?

Yes, stacks happening! I’m absolutely loving playing in The Chris Timms Experience with Mick, Joel and Dayton. We’ve done roughly 15 shows and they have been a heap of fun. There are many dates booked right up till August including a support with The Smart on the 5th May at Parkridge Tavern. Plus we are at the next Indie Rock Party May 25th At The Zoo. I’m also on the side working on my follow up album to The Journey Home which I’m looking to record with the guys. The writing is going very well and I hope to be in the studio by the end of the year.

Jonathan: Speaking of expectations; ultimately where would you like to end up? What’s your end game goal?

There’s many goals as a musician I’m continually working towards. Whether it be cracking that difficult guitar lick or finding that gorgeous melody or getting a spot at Wembley Stadium! But ultimately, the prize is to share my music with as many people as possible and hopefully bring a good influence into people’s lives who come and see a show with The Chris Timms Experience or they listen to my music on the net for the first time.

Jonathan: Do you ever dabble into other genres; or do you prefer sticking entirely to your prescribe genres?

Yes. I mean I just love music and it’s the same with Mick, Joel and Dayton. We are fans of music. As a guitarist I get the opportunity to dabble in other genres by doing some session work or fill in gigs. I do cover gigs every odd weekend which gives me lots of different styles to sink my teeth into. Not so long ago, I played some jazz numbers on an album “Col Usher- A mostly acoustic Christmas album”. It was stacks of fun and a real challenge. I had the charts handed to me Sunday and I was in the studio on a Tuesday!

Jonathan: Musicians always have a diverse opinion when it comes to this question – do you prefer being in the studio recording and perfecting your sound, or playing live and enjoying the atmosphere? What are you thoughts on this one?

I personally think both of these worlds have a lot to offer and go hand in hand. I can spend heaps of time in the studio, slaving for hours trying to create an awesome song, I love it. It’s great! But the process doesn’t end there for me. I feel a need to share a tune in a live setting. I love playing live- there is a rawness, an honesty about it and the audience gets to be part of what’s going on.

Jonathan: What’s the most memorable moment in your musical career and why?

This is a tough question because there’s just been so many. But if you’ll let me, I’ll share 3 with you. 1. My first gig with my first band at the Greenbank show in 1996. 2. Supporting The Screaming Jets at Cooly Hotel in 2007 with my then main band Liquidate and accompanying one of my students Tom at an end of year Recital in 2009.

Jonathan: If you could open for any artist/band; who would it be?

Gosh, another tough question! I would absolutely love to open for Iron Maiden. One of the best bands on the planet.

Jonathan: Lastly! How would you say your music has changed since you first started playing, to where you are now? Do you see your sound/music evolving anymore?

I think in just like any profession you learn as you go, you mature, find better ways of doing things. I’d like to think that some of these things have happened along the way! Haha. My playing, my singing, songwriting is continually evolving. It’s a constant Journey. Who knows where it will go next?

Sunday, sees me back in the jam room with the guys and will be doing something very special for you guys by filming a rehearsal and giving you a look at what goes on behind the scenes. You may be quite surprised what we get up to in the jam room! Watch this space for footage soon!

Recently I’ve been tinkering with new song ideas and started the writing process last week for material for the next album. At this stage, I’m hoping to have a new album for you guys around this time next year. This is the initial idea which is of course subject to change (haha). The song ideas are buzzing and its just a matter of working through that process. More news on that when it develops!

Well back to playing!

Thanks heaps for your support, hope you are doing well!
